The dawn on Saturday, the gunman knocked on the door of the Hoffmans in Champlin, Minnesota, identified as a police officer and then went to the house and shot the couple, according to judicial documents.

After the Hoffmans were shot, the officers went proactively to the house of their fellow legislator, former president of the Chamber of Representatives of Minnesota Melissa Hortman, in the nearby city of Brooklyn Park.

Around 3:35 am, when the officers arrived at Hortmans’s house, they saw a SUV “with police style lights” on the entrance and “immediately saw the defendant, still dressed as a police officer, shoot an adult man … through the open door of the house,” according to judicial records.

The gunman participated in a shooting with the responders and then fled the scene on foot, authorities said.
